From simple beginnings then growing into complex chaos. I'll show you the inner workings of an instrument created for the sole purpose of making noise.

SPACE RACE MADNESS SHOCKS WORLD!
DEAD PRESIDENT SOILS HIMSELF.
WELCOME COMRADES!
It is with great pleasure that I present the software noise making instrument, Circuit Bent Sputnik. Notice in the screen shot (lower part of this page), the advanced design in the control panel. Lots of knobs to turn and buttons to push.
It's a crowing achievement in early-era Soviet space race simulated technology... that's been circuit bent. Ahh, you can almost feel the warmth of those simulated tubes can't you?
The Capitalists Tremble!
Comrades, the idea hit me faster than Mir plummeting to Earth on re-entry: what if I found a strange, tarnished orb at a flea market - which I purchased for just 2 American dollars?
And, what if I circuit bent that orb? Only to find out later, that I had actually come into posession of the greatest slap in the face of the Western capitalists: Sputnik!
Well, comrades, as you know, I don't really have Sputnik. But, what if I created a computer simulation of Sputnik, only a circuit bent, music-making Sputnik?
After millions of calculations, thousands of failures, hundreds of sleepless nights, dozens of anonymous threats from the KGB, and a handful of stale headache pills, I have created the ultimate in late 1950's era simulated Soviet noise making technology. And I run it on a laptop. Just like they did in 1957!
I'm certain that if President Eisenhower were alive today, he would soil himself upon hearing the first bleeps and tweaks from Circuit Bent Sputnik. For he would know that the United States of America was once again, lagging behind Mother Russia, only this time the Space Race is circuit bent!

Note to Comrades who download this ensemble: In order to ruin the western capitalists, you must have Native Instruments Reaktor to run "Circuit Bent Sputnik". I know, Reaktor is not free, and the American Dollar is weak, but it's worth the price.
How to use this ensemble:
This is not a "normal" kind of instrument. You just have to kind of "deal with" circuit bent Sputnik because it's going to do whatever it does.
Hit the "Random" button in the Snapshots panel and press buttons on your laptop (or keyboard controller).
Make liberal adjustments to the knobs on the panel. What do you want... user friendly?
No, really. Don't even bother with trying to get the signal flow of Circuit Bent Sputnik. It will fry your brain. And please don't ask me to explain it to you... because I can't.
Yes, comrades, I made this instrument, but I never take notes. Oh, how about link to my site? That will surely crush the capitalists!

| Below Right: This is the model I used as the foundation for Circuit Bent Sputnik. My reason for creating this model was simple: build the model, then model the build. To the untrained eye, it looks like I connected a bunch of wires to some trashed electronics and a ball of aluminum foil. But, click on the image for a larger view and you'll see the difference, comrades. There, the aluminum foil is "heavy duty" foil (!!!) AND there's an Ethernet connector! And that is what makes this entire project so special. |
